Causes, incidence and risk factors:
This is considered a sexual dysfunction and psychosomatic condition. It may result from past sexual trauma, strong inhibitions about sex stemming from strict religious orthodoxy, as a secondary conditioned reaction to painful intercourse experiences, and less frequently as a reaction to male sexual dysfunction or due to a fundamental homosexual orientation in the woman. Vaginismus is seen only occasionally.

Women with varying degrees of vaginismus are usually phobic regarding coitus and penetration, and intercourse is usually painful. However, this does not mean that they are necessarily frigid. Many are very sexually responsive and may have orgasms through clitoral stimulation. Many women with vaginismus seek sexual contact and sexual play as long as vaginal penetration is avoided.
