This drawing shows the frontal section of the external auditory canal (A). When the external canal becomes infected (otitus external) the canal will become swollen and painful. Patients may complain of diminished hearing and a pus like discharge from the canal. Other structures identified include : B. Pinna of the ear (composed of cartilage) C. Mastoid sinus D. Tympanic membrane (ear drum)
