This picture shows the blood supply to the small and large intestine. Narrowing of the superior mesentric artery (A) or its numerous branching intestinal arteries is the underlying cause of ishchemic bowel disease. The superior mesentric vein (B) is the main conduit for blood returning to the interior vena cava and ultimately the heart.
