This picture shows the external ear canal and internal ear structures. Otitis media occurs when there is infection of the middle ear space. The semi-circular canals (labyrinth), filled with a fluid known as endolymph, are necessary for the maintenance of body position and balance. Inflammation of the semicircular canals (inner ear) results in a condition known as labyrinthitis. Infection of the external ear canal is known as otitis extern or "swimmers ear"
