The anatomy of the vertebral disks and their relationship to the exiting nerve roots. Inflammation or prolapse (displacement) of a disk can lead to impingement on the nearby exiting nerve root. This can cause pain that will radiate in the distribution of the involved nerve. A good example of this is sciatice where the problem occurs in the lower back.
